Which major insurance plans cover Registered Psychotherapists?
Last reviewed: May 2026
Coverage for Registered Psychotherapists has expanded significantly in Canada over the past five years. Most major insurers now include RPs as eligible providers under mental health benefit categories — but coverage depends on your specific plan design, not just your insurer.
The major Canadian insurers
Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Greenshield, and Equitable Life are the five largest group benefit insurers in Canada and all include coverage for Registered Psychotherapists across many of their standard plan tiers. Blue Cross plans (COLOUR and others) typically also include RP coverage. Most Desjardins plans cover RPs as well.
That said, "the plan includes RPs" is a generalization. Whether your specific plan covers RPs depends on how your employer's plan was structured when it was set up. Older plans, particularly those designed before the Psychotherapy Act (2015) created the RP designation in Ontario, may list only psychologists and social workers as eligible. These plans are increasingly being updated, but not all have been.
How to verify your own plan
The most reliable way to confirm coverage is to call the member services number on your benefit card and ask specifically: "Does my plan include coverage for sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) under the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario?" Ask also about the annual maximum and any per-session limits.
Alternatively, log into your insurer's member portal. Benefit summaries are usually accessible online and will list eligible provider types under the mental health or extended health category.
