Are your therapists licensed and regulated in Ontario?
Last reviewed: May 2026
Credential transparency matters. In Ontario, anyone can call themselves a "counsellor" or "life coach" without any regulated training. Understanding what makes a therapist regulated — and how to verify it — protects you as a client.
What it means to be regulated in Ontario
Regulated health professionals in Ontario are registered with a professional college that holds them to legally enforceable standards of practice. These standards cover initial training requirements (typically a master's degree for psychotherapy providers), ongoing professional development, professional liability insurance, and a formal complaints and discipline process that the public can access.
Being regulated is not the same as being licensed — in Canada, we typically use the term "registered" — but the implications are similar: you have recourse if your care falls below professional standards.
Valisen therapist designations
All Valisen therapists are credentialed members of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), as Registered Psychotherapists (RP). This designation requires graduate-level training and active registration in good standing.
How to verify
You can verify any therapist's registration at any time through the public registries maintained by CRPO (crpo.ca) or OCSWSSW (ocswssw.org). We are happy to provide the registration number and designation of any Valisen therapist upon request.
